The band started in 2010 with Henry and his brother Lewis jamming in the lounge when they lived in Auckland. After they moved North, Ethan joined the band, and has been a member for four years. The de Jong boys are of Ngati Pikiao and Ngati Tuara descent, and Ethan is also of Maori descent. We would like to thank everyone who contributed, especially the ladies from the Op shop who closed for the week to help us because without them we wouldn’t have achieved so much.”

Advisory panel for Mangawhai

Spreading the word

u by Ann Morgan

Two new rural newspapers from Kaipara Lifestyler’s publishers, Dargaville-based NorthSouth Multi Media, are entering the national mix with the launch of Wairarapa Farming Lifestyles this month, to be joined by Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles in November.

With continued growth putting pressure on Mangawhai’s infrastructure, the Kaipara District Council is working on the development of a new town plan.

p The Mangawhai town planning advisory panel Ian Greenwood, Joanna Roberts, Richard Gunson, Kelli Sullivan, David Wingate and Belinda Vernon

A community panel has been appointed to represent the community’s views, provide feedback to the council as the plan is developed, and guide the process. The panel chair, Belinda Vernon, is joined by Joanna Roberts, Dr Ian Greenwood, David Wingate, Richard Gunson, and Kelli Sullivan. Former council acting chief executive Dr Jill McPherson will support the project team. “Growth in Mangawhai has been significant and we need planned growth with infrastructure to support it. This means not just providing roads and pipes and water, but the right types of development to cater for a range of needs and sensitive environments,” says KDC chief executive Graham Sibery.

VOTE

1

Working with the community, the council will be looking at roads, stormwater, water supply, landscapes, land development and density, and urban design. “We need to look ahead now, so that our infrastructure and town design will be appropriate for the long term and the outstanding qualities of Mangawhai are preserved.” As the project team develops options, the community will be able to see the possibilities and voice their own thinking about what could be put in place. “We plan to have open days and workshops to gain feedback about potential solutions to help us shape the draft document for the Mangawhai Town Plan,” says Mr Sibery. ¢

This brings the NSMM stable to the weekly Kaipara Lifestyler and seven rural publications, being delivered to some 70 per cent of rural delivery addresses in New Zealand. “This expansion is a tribute to our skilled staff and to our embracing technology which eliminates the barrier of distance,” said general manager, Deb Wright. “Some might blame technology for the demise of small town New Zealand, but we believe the opposite. With the right attitude, it is a powerful tool that makes sometimes geographically disadvantaged regions more accessible. “We believe in successful rural communities and now that sophisticated internet connections, smart phones, tablets and the like are universally in use, we know our technology-driven publications and media centres can assist in building them. “From our River Road, Dargaville, base, we are able to connect with rural communities with the click of a keyboard, on computer or phone, to start sharing stories and pictures across the bulk of rural New Zealand.

“We strongly believe that communication and connectedness is essential for a rural community to thrive. Therefore our philosophy is old-fashioned grassroots journalism, telling the stories of our readers and their neighbours. “The new publications will carry essential information on farming developments, from science to politics, markets to regulations, product innovation and accessibility, along with wide-ranging rural services. “With an increasing demand all over the world for quality primary produce, New Zealand will be, more than ever, reliant on a strong, informed and wellconnected rural sector.” ¢

Eight students between the ages of 11–15 years old attended the event earlier this month. The convention sees students use the gifts and abilities they have discovered and developed over the year. Students choose from over 140 different events to compete in which are spread across many different disciplines including academics, athletics, visual arts, media arts, manual arts, music, scripture, and platform which is speech and drama. “The Convention went very well and the students gained many placings. They came back ecstatically happy and asking to go to the convention again next year. Already students have started selecting their entries for next year. She says the hard work and diligence of the students, support from parents and community members during the yearly preparation was an intrinsic part of the success the students experienced. “A special thanks goes out from the students and the staff at Otamatea Christian School to Maura Flower, Wes Cullen, Betty Cairnes, Julia Leaf and Robbie Parker for their support and input. The results speak for themselves.” The majority of placings achieved were 1sts, followed closely by 2nds and then 3rds. The students were judged by three judges and the scores were averaged. RSA looking to the future

Showcasing Kaipara talent

The Northern Wairoa Memorial Returned Services Association in Dargaville is becoming a popular place to be as the new committee has taken over management of the club with three part-time employees.

From October 3 to October 30 art enthusiasts have the opportunity to visit ‘Connections’ at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Hokianga Rd Dargaville.

p Northern Wairoa Memorial RSA vice president Alvyn Silver, president David Fagan and secretary Ross Newlove

President David Fagan said membership has risen significantly with close to 60 new members signing up since April. It is believed this is a result of new people moving to the area and transferring their memberships. Mr Fagan says young people are also becoming more interested and involved with the club with growing attendances each year on Anzac Day with many having great grandparents who fought in conflicts such as Passchendaele and Gallipoli. The committee believes it is important for any club going forward to focus on its future. “The young people are the future. We have had wonderful support from the

members and community and we would like to give special mention to Emma Smith of Tailored Legal Solutions who has done a tremendous amount of work for the club pro bono,” said Mr Fagan. He says the club has a positive future now that it is operating profitably and the next stage is to finalise a robust business plan and to develop a strategic initiative. The RSA is organising a fashion parade with local clothing and shoe store The Shoe Box on Saturday, October 15. This will be the first event under the new operation. The bar and dining facilities are open Thursdays and Fridays from 3.30pm until late with snooker and pool played on Tuesdays from 7–10pm. ¢

This is an exhibition of artworks from the recently completed Kaipara Art Awards which is an annual event held by the Dargaville Arts Association and the Mangawhai Artists Inc, at the Kauri Museum at Matakohe. Dargaville Ar ts Association committee member and Kaipara Art Awards chairman John Pickworth says this will be the first major exhibit to be displayed at the Dargaville Community Arts Centre. “The Kaipara Art Awards had a change of format this year and to enter artists were required to be members of a Kaipara art group. “This resulted in a contiguous exhibition and meant these groups saw increases in membership.” Mr Pickworth says this is an opportunity

to buy a piece of art that has been part of this prestigious exhibition and encourages everyone to make the most of the display. “Bring your family and children along or people who have never experienced an exhibition before and take advantage of this opportunity right here in the heart of Dargaville.” ‘Connections’ will be displayed in the showroom on the ground floor of the centre along with a range of other works from Dargaville Arts Association members. Early settlers celebrated

Settlers Day at the Kauri Museum saw past meet present as Victorian costumes were worn and historic machinery was started up, celebrating the history of the Albertland Settlers in the Matakohe area last weekend. “It is about reconnecting with the Albertland pioneer settlers in Paparoa and surrounds which is why the museum was founded in 1962,” said museum CEO Lisa Tolich. “Settlers day has been running at the museum for approximately 20 years and has always been a free live day with a lot of arts, crafts and trade displays that connect people with the early settlers. “There is a lot of hands-on so people get to participate in things like making rope and posies — learning what the different posy are for by the flowers in them.” This year was themed to a Victorian funfair and people experienced ‘all the fun at the fair’ with gum polishing, hoopla and different games from days gone by.

“The event has always been popular and we start up a lot of our operational equipment including the Cat 60, which is one of the earliest tractors in New Zealand. It is a good opportunity for the engine enthusiasts to talk to our volunteer team,” said Ms Tolich. “It was a fantastic day and a chance for descendants of the original pioneers to celebrate the past, but also for new settlers in the district to get acquainted with it. “It was lovely to see a lot of our younger residents come p Victorian dresses were all part of the Settlers Day celebrations along and join in the fun. They got involved and the children were all them. It really was all about the fun at able to take something home with the fair.” ¢

School tradition continues u by Ann Morgan

Mangawhai Beach School will be hosting their annual Agricultural and Gala day this Labour weekend, fundraising toward the ongoing support of the children’s learning and educational growth through teacher aides and classroom resources. “The event has a long standing history and has traditionally run on Labour Weekend at the school for many years. This is an awesome family day out for everyone and attracts 2,000–3,000 people each year,” said chair of Friends of Mangawhai School Mariska Glover. “The day is full of good old fashioned fun with a lot to see and do. There will be games and activities, quickfire raffles, books, toys, bric-a-brac, plants, pony rides, bouncy castle, face painting, coconut shy and the children’s art will also be on display for sale — this was really popular last year.” There will be entertainment with local bands, kapa haka and dance groups and a large food stall will be on site. There will also be the rock climbing wall for those who are adventurous. “We are grateful to the local and wider community for their continued sponsorship and prizes that are donated to us. There is an Auckland accommodation package, a beauty package and lots more wonderful prizes. “The school really appreciates the support of everyone who contributes and comes along to the event. It is a great day and our teacher aides are a huge necessity to the school and the on going support of our students.” Any child aged from 5–13 years old is welcome

Network News Flawed electricity plan A group of businesses, local government and electricity sector participants has come out in support of a legal challenge to the Electricity Authority. The group comprises Ashburton District Council, Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Counties Power, Counties Power Consumer Trust, EA Networks, EMA, Entrust, Auckland Federated Farmers, Northpower, Norske Skog, Top Energy and Vector. Utility retailer and electricity generator Trustpower has asked for a judicial review of the consultation process used by the Authority in a review of how the national grid is paid for. “The Electricity Authority’s proposals to change the way households and businesses pay for their electricity are being rushed through by stealth before Christmas,” says Kim Campbell, a spokesperson for the group. “The plan as it stands will have a devastating impact on some of our most vulnerable communities. Not only will some face a big new increase in their power bills, but others will face the possibility of losing their jobs if their employers cannot afford to stay operating,” says Mr Campbell. “The Electricity Authority has said it could take years to figure out the true of cost of the changes for business and communities. That’s just not good enough. That data needs to be made clear before decisions are made, and all affected communities need to be properly consulted. “The proposals are divisive. They pit region against region, business against business and community against community. The Authority cleverly suggests there are always winners and losers in these processes - but the only real winners are the Tiwai Pt smelter and Meridian Energy. In fact, Meridian has joined the court proceedings with the sole purpose of supporting the process. This is not surprising given how much they stand to gain: Meridian by over $57 million every year and Pacific Aluminium by over $20 million every year, being money out of the pockets of homes and businesses in large parts of New Zealand straight to the shareholders of these companies,” he says. “In 2012, the Authority disbanded an industry working group looking at the issue, so those who could’ve given expert advice were shut out. It has not commissioned any independent expert reviews of the merits of its proposals, and not engaged fully with the expert evidence provided by submitters. No cross-submissions have been allowed, and there is no regulatory right of appeal. This is bad regulatory process, in marked contrast to how the Commerce Commission operates. “And providing just ten weeks to evaluate a plan to overhaul nearly a billion dollars of electricity sector charges, over the same period as affected parties were working through other significant regulatory reviews, is further proof of a rushed and flawed approach. “The Electricity Authority needs to press pause on this. A significant proportion of the industry still don’t agree there is a problem that needs solving. This is a oncein-a-generation change and for the sake of Kiwi consumers, they can’t afford to make mistakes,” says Mr Campbell.

An old African proverb says ‘if your heart is beating you have rhythm’ so make sure you get along to the African Drum and Dance weekend held in Dargaville from October 7–9.

The Otamatea Group Day Calf Club committee are seeking the return of trophies people still have from previous years for this year’s event.

For the fourth year in a row, world class African drummer Simon Fraser and dancer Monica Evans will share their skills with participants from as far away as Wairarapa. Baylys Beats drummer Josie Scott says the weekend is suited to drummers and dancers of all abilities. “Simon and Monica have both worked around the world and we are very fortunate to have them,” she says. The weekend consists of several classes for drumming and dancing where students will learn a performance piece. “It is a very fun and fast experience. It is funded by Creative New Zealand which we are very grateful for and there is a special price for Kaipara residents. There are still some fully funded places for young people as well.

“Baylys Beats organise the weekend so our group can grow in our understanding of the music and share it with people from around the country as well as locals. “I enjoy the collective energy from a large group of people coming together and making music. It is so much fun and so energising,” says Josie. “This will be the last chance for a while to be involved because my husband Graeme and I are off to live in West Africa next year for 12 months so if people want to take part they need to get in this year. It is a really special event and we are very lucky to have it here,” she says. Contact Josie Scott on 021 0223 8621 or email josie.scott@xtra.co.nz to secure your place.. ¢

“The trophies may have been presented to competitors who no longer attend school or who may have moved from the area. “In past years, trophy winners were asked to return them to their local primary school for the Group Day representative to collect,” says committee secretary Karen Woolley. “The event has a proud history and all trophies won last year need to be returned please, along with those still outstanding from the previous few years, ‘no questions asked’, so that we can present them to this year’s winners. New hope for long-term back pain sufferers

After over eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. "To me surgery was never an option" he said" as long as I still could walk, there was hope" Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. "The first time I tried it the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that" he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, "as specialists had told me it was irreversible", "I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief". To Dave's surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, "I couldn't believe it" he told me "I had spent large amounts of money on every form

of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time" It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to our expo in Ruakaka this weekend, or come to one of our other shows near you, for a treatment. (See below for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

TESTIMONIAL

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

"We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children. The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the heath of the brain as we all get older" he told me. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, "I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain. That is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves. Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less" he said "we let the tables do the talking".

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been inverting for seven years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS. Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate. Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

WELLSFORD

Wellsford School 47 School Road Wellsford 8th & 9th Oct 10am–4pm

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of the shows, you have nothing to lose and the chances are a lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Come along for a free treatment In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The clock is ticking toward summer u by Andy Bryenton

The Home Shows have packed up leaving a billion ideas behind, the sun is shining and there are so many things to achieve before the relatives arrive for the summer holidays — but where to start? The spring spruce-up fever which grips people at the first hint of good weather may just be genetic — a memory from the days before water blasters and concrete mixers when airing out the cave was a dire necessity. No matter why, we all feel the need to (literally, for you farmers) make hay while the sun shines, and in modern times this sometimes means relinquishing the hammer — or saw, or paintbrush — to the professionals. If that’s the case, use that most versatile of modern human tools, the cell phone, first and soon. Tradies report that the big boom in home buying has left them with bulging diaries — to get jobs sorted before Christmas, it’s wise to move before Labour Day. Out in the yard, it’s the usual showdown of man — and woman — versus wild, as the eruption of greenery meets the sharp steel of the hedge trimmer, lawnmower and brushcutter. Now’s the time to rip the tarp off those small-engined machines and give them some TLC before a mixture of

New look for Foster’s

Long-standing Dargaville-owned and operated home decorating store Foster’s is developing a new look as Karen and Arron Foster make the place their own after formally taking over the business from Arron’s family a year ago. “We are looking forward to growing the business more and putting our own stamp on it as well as meeting new customers and forming a good relationship with them,” said Karen. “We appreciate the support we have had from our long-standing customers as well. “It’s great being in a supportive community where you get to know everyone.” The couple have a new-look van with a new company logo displayed on the side and are expanding and changing the products available, including a new range of ergonomically designed chairs under the IMG brand from Norway, which Arron says are great for those with back trouble. The Resene Colour Shop has brand new colour boards with the latest colour charts so customers can ensure their home has all the latest looks. The team

have also changed some of the products they stock including a new selection of candles and items that are a little more rustic and beach themed. “It was time to change things up a bit,” said Arron. “Now that it is officially our business we wanted to make this place our own and add our personality to it. “With expanding our La-Z-Boy range we are making a new section especially for them so customers can try them all in one spot.” Karen and Arron’s son Mason, who has just turned 17, is also working in the store, making him the third generation to be involved in the family business. The family stock a vast range of lounge, bedroom, giftware and art, blinds, manchester, homewares and wallpaper. Fosters is the place to go for all your home decorating and furnishing needs. ¢

The old-fashioned tradition of a ‘spring clean’ may have originated in the far more rustic middle ages — when spring was the season of the one and only yearly changing of the straw flooring — but today it’s less about the dust brush and more about the paint brush. As with those outdoor tasks and infrastructural projects, it’s also a good idea to consider the timeframe of interior decorating plans this time of year. Professionals like curtain makers, flooring specialists, tilers, painters and wallpaper hangers have full ‘dance cards’ leading into the busy holiday season, with the same boost in property sales to contend with as their fellow tradies. Being mindful of this fact will help in transforming your interior space, whether for a more stylish summer or because you too, want to meet the real estate market with a polished product. This time of year is full-throttle for interior experts for another reason. The big expos and home shows — both here in Northland and on a gigantic scale in Auckland — have served the same purpose as the Detroit Motor Show in the world of cars. The hot styles for the season have been established, blending retro-chic with modern minimalism, and those who

D I N I N G A N D E N T E R TA I N M E N T

A month of masks and merriment u by Andy Bryenton

October may be renowned for ushering in spring in this hemisphere, but elsewhere in the world it’s the month of the traditional harvest, giving rise to rituals and celebrations focussed on food and drink. We get the best of both worlds here in the Kaipara, with long lazy evenings to complement the fun of holidays like Halloween and celebrations like Oktoberfest. These days there’s no reason to journey to Germany to take part in a festival of great craft beers. In fact, small Kiwi breweries may have the old masters on the hop if current trends continue. Matching quality beer with great food is something our local eateries do well and a cold pint is even available at home thanks to the uptake of some brand new brands at your local bottle shop. A personal favourite — the tall, dark and edgy Jack the Sipper, London porter style beer from Boundary Road Brewery. Or pair up Mac’s Three Wolves pale ale with good old Kiwi fish and chips for a nice summer evening spread. The catch of the day at Matich’s would be just the ticket. Halloween has become less of a frightening and ghoulish night than a fun and freaky celebration of cheesy horror tropes and wacky costumes. The old Christian holiday before All Saints’ Day was built on top of a Druidic festival of the harvest, so good food — not just candy — should be the order of the day for little monsters. Then again, with shows like The Walking Dead more popular than ever, dress up for the grown-ups is sure to be popular too. Stay

tuned to find out where the big ‘monster mash’ is going to be held this season! Finally, it’s nearly time for another annual tradition — the Aratapu Tavern’s big Jazz Party. Rocking the lively music of the ‘big easy’ alongside a scrumptious menu of spicy, beguiling southern dishes, this festival of swinging tunes and big flavours has become our own local version of the New Orleans carnival! Definitely one to enjoy with friends. ¢

An’ wile Boss no’s you are pretty clever writin’ a papa kolum, he was only kidding wen he sed you should run for kouncil.” There ya go readas, Boss was just givin’ me a bit ova runaround eh? But Sharlene did say she’s made shure Boss’s votin’ papers were ina mail. “It’s time we got Kypra back in a democrisy,” she sed. “Ya see Billy, we hada guvinmint step in an’ give us bosses called kommishiners, an’ reely, we bin treeted like skoolkids who gotta do wot we told. Now though, we kin decide who’s gonna be in charge, with a new mayor and counsillers.

Well, I wus pleesed to get that sorted, but I must edmit there’s bin a helluva lot of ‘lection stuff goin’ on. Sharlene sed she hoped so, cos Chump wantid ter build a wall ‘roun’ Americy, an’ he was bein’ a mate of that Rushin boss, Mr Pootin. “We don’t want him ina White House in Washingtin eh Billy,” sed Sharlene. “But anyway, lets look ahed to our own ‘lections. Be reel good ter have a lokil bein’ the Mayor, sumone ter get Kypra back on track — fix some potholes an’ stuff. Sumone we can ring

On the Rural Radar Bee safe Agcarm and Apiculture New Zealand have announced a campaign to highlight the need for farmers and beekeepers to work together to manage the use of agrichemicals near hives. A flyer and poster have been produced on how to protect bees from unintended exposure to agrichemicals as well as tips on reducing risks to bees. Agcarm chief executive Mark Ross says “bees are extremely good pollinators of crops, so contribute substantially to New Zealand’s multibillion dollar agricultural economy. “Agrichemicals are also vital for ensuring the security of our food supply, especially as we are coined ‘the farmer’s market of the world’. When these products are used responsibly they pose no threat to our bee population. Milk money Hard on the heels of the Fonterra increase in the farmgate milk price to above $5 per kilogram comes more indication of dairy optimism with news that the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company has set its payout at $6.30 a kg of milk solids — well ahead of its far larger competitors. That means a boosted income for 113 suppliers

farming in prime dairy country near Morrinsville in the Waikato. The improved dairy outlook clears the way for debt repayment and farm work previously put on the back burner. That means some work flow into rural support businesses. Priority paperwork Dairy farmers who fail to keep written employment agreements or time records are under a national spotlight from the Labour Inspectorate in an inquiry into into compliance in the industry which has already led to hefty fines. A Taranaki dairy farm will pay at least $87,000 for serious employment law breaches following a Labour Inspectorate investigation, including $64,000 in arrears, and a $23,000 penalty. Six Waikato farmers have received infringement notices of $1,000 or $2,000 for breaching employment obligations. Wage, holiday and leave records, and a written employment agreement are basic employment requirements and employers who do not have these are liable to fines by an Inspector of $1000 per breach, all the way up to $20,000. Rural research AgResearch has won more than $16m for research into pest control, animal nutrition and forage production,

and ways to objectively measure the quality of New Zealand meat. The funding is part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s 2016 Endeavour Fund, which in total has allocated over $209 million over the next five years in new scientific research projects. The AgResearch projects which have been selected are: • Capturing the true value of New Zealand meat; objective

measurement of meat quality in beef, lamb and venison ($4.25m) • Evaluating the potential of forages with elevated photosynthesis and metabolisable energy ($10m) • Developing a microbial fuel cell to control electron flow and direct rumen fermentation towards better ruminant nutrition ($1m) • World-first proof of application of Trojan female pest control ($0.87m) ¢
